More police presence at Festival of Friends

After a night of traffic mayhem in Ancaster Friday, police have come up with a new operational plan for the weekend’s events at the Festival of Friends.

“We were not prepared last night,” Staff Sergeant Matt Kavanagh said Saturday. “It was more people than anyone could have predicted. The organizers were flabbergasted at the turnout and therefore has caused the police service to form an operational plan to prepare for traffic tonight.”

The number of officers they deployed Friday night was based on the estimated attendance police had been given, but the actual number of festival-goers turned out to be “unbelievable”, Kavanagh said Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday, 35 officers, including four members of the Mounted Unit and two ACTION teams, have been assigned to the Ancaster Fairgrounds, Kavanagh said.

Loren Lieberman, the festival’s general manager, said they could not estimate the exact attendance on opening night, which featured acts such as The Sheep Dogs and City and Colour, but they “pretty much did an entire (three-day) Festival of Friends in terms of revenue and numbers” Friday.

The main field at the fairgrounds is about two and a half times longer and twice as wide as the space in Gage Park and it was 80 per cent full opening night, Lieberman said.

“So I think the real main point of this is if we were in Gage Park, and had last night’s line-up, oh my God. The city would’ve exploded.”

A Festival of Friends Complaints Facebook page has been set up, where people have posted their grievances against the new location and reported being stuck in traffic for hours. Some posted on Twitter Friday night that they were bailing on the event because it was taking too long to get to the Trinity Road South and Wilson Street West site.

The festival moved to the Ancaster site from Gage Park this year. It had been held at Gage Park for 35 years.
