HECFI is set to lose thousands on Saturday’s Lingerie Football League game — and taxpayers are picking up the tab.

The league has been guaranteed $90,000 to come to Hamilton and only about 1,000 tickets have been sold, said Councillor Sam Merulla, a member of the Hamilton Entertainment and Convention Facilities Inc. board.

Depending on concession sales or a last-minute rush of tickets, that means HECFI could lose more than $50,000 and as much as $100,000 on the event.

“It’s appropriate that it’s lingerie football, because we’re losing our shirts on this deal we inherited from the previous board,” Merulla said.

Lingerie football features women playing a seven-on-seven version of full-contact football while wearing a uniform that consists of a metallic pink bra and panties, lace garter belt, choker and protective pads. The July 30 ‘All-Fantasy game’ at Copps Coliseum will be the first of its kind in Canada.

Tickets for the Copps game are $20 to $80, which means HECFI has not sold enough tickets to cover the $90,000 guarantee alone. When the cost of presenting the game is taken into account — including promotion, staffing, and administration — the losses could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. And since the city funds HECFI’s operations, those losses will be paid for with taxpayer dollars.

HECFI CEO John Hertel could not be reached for comment. However, he told The Spectator in early July that it was difficult to predict what kind of crowd the July 30 game will draw, as the game is so new.

In the U.S., Lingerie Football games typically draw 6,000 to 7,000 people at an average of $48 a ticket. Attempts by The Spectator to reach the league for comment were not successful.

The decision to book Lingerie Football was made before the city took control of HECFI in June. Council voted to seize the arms-length agency after it lost millions in 2010 and was subject to a damning independent review.
