Ticats lay 57-20 trouncing on the Als

Don’t plan the parade just yet.

Ticats head coach Marcel Bellefeuille says, despite some encouraging signs, Wednesday’s 57-20 destruction of the Montreal Alouettes means little.

“I want people to get excited about this team but not about this win or about the loss against Toronto,” Bellefeuille said. “It’s pre-season, you can read too much into those things.”

Here’s what we know for sure: the special teams units are primed and ready.

Marcus Thigpen scored on a 100 yard kickoff return in the first quarter and Chris Williams followed that up with a 91 yard punt return to the house in the third frame while kickers Justin Medlock and Eric Wilbur combined for seven field goals.

Starting quarterback Kevin Glenn and the fellow first stringers staked Hamilton to 23-17 halftime lead with Glenn finishing 13 of 25 for 118 yards without a touchdown or a pick in his 30 minutes of action.

Glenn was more enthusiastic about the win than his coach.

“I think it’s statement win,” he said. “That’s the team to beat in the East and we did it tonight.”

Running back Avon Cobourne, a key off-season acquisition, had six carries for 40 yards and two catches for another14 but declined to take satisfaction in sticking it to his old team.

“It doesn’t matter to me who we play,” Cobourne said. “?As long as we win and they lose, I don’t care.”

Hard decisions will be made in the next couple of days. With the over abundance of offensive talent we have, I'm hoping that will parley into a trade for some help in our Defensive backfield. Trading, as opposed to releasing, may allow someone to get what they need, in running backs, receivers, or a kicker, while helping us shore up our Defensive corps. This new aggressive Defense will be very demanding, and require the best possible talent there is to be successful. You hate to just give away (release) quality players for nothing, and it's not likely too many primo Defensive backs will be released on Saturday. I feel a trade (if it's out there) is paramount before the Weekend.
