Hamilton will get two new GO stations by 2015 if the final report of the environmental assessment released Thursday is implemented. A James Street North station will be supplemented with one at Centennial Parkway as GO Transit implements Niagara rail service, but a Fifty Road location that has sparked a lawsuit against the city and the ward councillor has been identified only as a “possible future station”.
The Hamilton stations, together with a train layover facility at Lewis Road in Stoney Creek, will cost $186 million and comprise option one of a staged plan that will see regular trains to St Catharines and Niagara Falls. As such, the provincially-funded investment may be another nail in the coffin of the mid-peninsula highway advocated by city council at the behest of the airport managers and the Chamber of Commerce.
It may also have implications for a controversial Wal-Mart centred development at Fifty Road and the QEW that was approved by council in 2009. The developer of that commercial complex, Penady (Stoney Creek) Ltd, is suing councillor Brenda Johnson and city council over a motion adopted in January that advocated leaving the station on Penady lands as had originally been approved.
Penady spokesperson Hal Kersey told the Spectator that the council motion created uncertainty about the transit hub and could delay the Wal-Mart development. City officials backed the Fifty Road station and initially didn’t recommend the Centennial station, although they now appear to be behind the latter facility.
It will be built on city-owned land on the west side of the parkway currently occupied by a woodlot, an auto recycling facility and a trucking company. The train platform will be on the south side of the tracks connected by a pedestrian tunnel to the station and parking for an initial 425 vehicles on the north. Bus bays and a kiss-and-ride facility would also be on the north side.
The James Street North station “would include a station building and platform along the south side of the CNR mainline, along with parking, bus bays and a Kiss and Ride area to allow for drop-offs and taxi patrons,” says the GO report. “Initial parking would be sized to accommodate 300 spaces.”
Future plans could place a platform on the north side plus a pedestrian tunnel and elevator and possibly a multi-level parking facility. The station is not recommended to replace existing GO service on Hunter Street.
“It is expected that the James Street station is to be serviced by GO trains in conjunction with the existing Hamilton GO Centre station,” states the report. “This would allow for GO Transit to service both the north and south population centres of Hamilton.”
