Churchill Bulldogs finish season unbeaten

It’s class dismissed for the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs hockey team.

And it appears they’ve learned their lessons well.

Churchill, the only school in the Hamilton-Wentworth Division II league to offer a hockey academy course, won the HIAC boys’ championship Wednesday at the Chedoke Twin Pad Arena. Playing in front of a packed house, the Bulldogs scored a convincing 6-2 victory over the Westmount Wildcats. 

It was Churchill’s first title on ice since the 2006-07 season.

There are three other schools in Hamilton-Wentworth that offer hockey in the classroom — Ancaster, Waterdown and Sherwood — but they formed three-quarters of the league’s Division I grouping this season.

“I teach the Hockey Canada Skills Academy,” said Churchill coach Dave Soules. “It’s the hockey class we’ve had for four years. A lot of these kids have been in my class for three or four years. They’ve been on the ice 30 extra hours a semester. They can work on their skating and skill development.”
