Make It 1803: Festival of Friends to break Guinness Record
Dust off your guitars friends; on August 8 all musically inclined Hamiltonians are invited to gather at Festival of Friends to break the Guinness Record for the largest guitar ensemble. To make an official attempt at this record, Hamilton must have 1,803 participants simultaneously perform Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” The ensemble will be led by various musicians performing at the festival.
The Guinness Record is currently held by the town Leinfelden-Echterdingen in Germany where in June 2007, 1,802 musicians performed “Smoke on the Water” in unison. Toronto attempted to break this record with a rendition of Neil Young’s “Helpless” in June 2009, but fell short.
Toronto’s shortcomings may be fuel for Hamiltonians to come out and participate in this exciting experience. It would be a great accomplishment for Hamilton’s music community to break this record.
“Hamilton has a strong community of musicians; it will be a great experience and a lot of fun to give this record our best shot,” says Loren Lieberman, director of Festival of Friends.
Participants are encouraged to pre-register online at www.makeit1803.com starting July 20, 2009. Registration on August 8th will begin at 12 p.m. in Gage Park. The ensemble is scheduled to begin at 2p.m. An open mic stage will be set up for musicians that want to take advantage of the guitars on their backs.
Watch for the Make It 1803 television commercial airing locally.
