Poisoned dog dies

One of four dogs which became violently ill after eating something along the Bruce Trail off Portage Road in Niagara Falls has died.

Now Niagara police are warning dog owners using the area at the east end of Stanley Avenue heading towards Niagara-on-the-Lake to keep dogs on a leash, watch what they may pick up and report anything suspicious.

Police said they were told Friday that a man taken his dogs to the trail Tuesday for a walk. An hour after they got home one of the dogs went into extreme convulsions and eventually died.

The dead dog has been sent for further examination.

Officers also learned another man had taken three dogs to the same area two weeks before and his dogs were severely ill with similar symptoms a short time later.

“The owner was able to seek medical assistance and all three dogs recovered,” a police spokesman said in a statement.
