Canada won again in the epic Battle of Stoney Creek last weekend as they beat back the US forces, securing this country’s future as a nation.
Those that know their history aren’t exactly surprised by this. After all, this was a re-enactment of a battle that happened almost 200 years ago.
They may be surprised, however, by the numbers. Almost 10,000 people attended the Re-enactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek this past weekend. Most were from Hamilton area, with some from the GTA and a few Americans who crossed the border to watch their soldiers lose yet again. Battlefield House Museum and Park curator Susan Ramsay told theStoney Creek Newsthat she was impressed with how everything went this year, and although no one is ready to talk about plans for the bi-centennial this past weekend could be an indication of how great that celebration, three years from now, could be.
“We had a strong increase in attendance this year, with the additional visitors coming into the park and our History in Action day on Friday,” she said. “We had an additional 300 students from around the province coming in for that, and the weather really cooperated this year. There were no problems.”
Ms. Ramsays impression was that those in attendance enjoyed the educational aspect but also really enjoyed what they were seeing. She praised the volunteers.
