When you take a stroll through the Downtown Core this summer don’t be surprised to see a change in the uniform of the officers patrolling the area. Hamilton Police Core Patrol officers will be joined by uniformed RCMP officers.
They didn’t bring their horses and there isn’t a big movie shoot but they will be patrolling the Downtown Core with Hamilton Police Service (HPS) officers from now to the end of the summer. An RCMP training officer and recruit from the Hamilton/Niagara detachment, under the command of Inspector Steve Martin, will be placed with a Division One Core patrol team from HPS.
This initiative exposes the RCMP officers to the HPS concept of Community-based Policing. Each team will be paired for a three week period and during that time the RCMP officers will be involved in the interaction with the community at a level they would not normally experience. With a focus on community safety, the team will be ensuring all laws, Federal, Provincial and Municipal by-laws are being adhered to.
This initiative also provides HPS with the opportunity to expand on the partnership with the RCMP.
