More than 100 Sherwood Secondary School students and teachers spent Tuesday night out in the cold, sleeping on the west lawn in order to raise awareness about homelessness.
Hailey Edge, one of the students who organized the 14-hour event, said the idea came after hearing Liz Murray speak about going from homeless to Harvard.
“We saw her speak in December and from that we had a discussion afterward about what we could do at our school,” she said.
As part of the awareness exercise, the students challenged their peers to bring food donations and toiletries for food banks.
About 110 students and teachers took part in the event. While some students took shelter in tents, many slept on cardboard as the temperature went down to 4C overnight.
