First it was bottled water. Now it’s bad foods.
A Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board trustee wants to help high school students watch their waistlines by forcing cafeterias to prominently display the calories of menu choices.
Stoney Creek representative Robert Barlow this week gave his colleagues notice of a motion that, if passed, will require the board’s food-service contractor to post the information when classes start again in September.
Introduced on the heels of the board’s move to ban the sale and purchase of bottled water at all schools, the motion will be debated on May 25 and comes as the board prepares to tender its food-service contract, which expires this summer.
“It may not stop them from buying the hamburgers and French fries and fish and chips, but it’s informed choice,” Mr. Barlow said.
