The local business improvement area requested them more than a year ago as a way to deter potential troublemakers from the street. Two Hamilton police surveillance cameras are slated to be installed on Concession Street June 9-11, weather permitting.
“I think it’s well past due,” said BIA chair Paul Wharton, who welcomed word of the installation plans. “It’s a (proactive) move to prevent any problems that might occur yet.”
About the size of a grapefruit, the all-weather cameras will go up on utility poles at Concession and Summit and Concession and Hamilton, between Upper Wentworth and Upper Sherman.
Tim Fletcher, forensic video technician and closed circuit television project manager with the Hamilton Police Service, said the project was delayed as police investigated and looked to acquire equipment that will enable the cameras to transmit high quality images back to the downtown central station. He said they finally agreed on a radio system with a local relay to transmit the images.
