Orchard Park Secondary School is primed for glory as the track and field team heads to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association Championship this week.
The event was held yesterday (Thursday, May 21) and the 21 athletes participating are, what coach Janet Elliott called, an amazing team with an incredible amount of potential.
The team just finished competing in the city high school championships at Mohawk Sports Park and were set to compete in St. Catharines for SOSSA.
The 21 athletes were taken out of 35 that competed at HWIAC because to qualify for SOSSA they had to place in the top five in their events.
Sports include the 100 and 400- metre dashes, distance in the 800 and 1500 metre categories and field events including medals for long jump, triple jump and high jump.
“For the last three years we’ve had some excellent track results,” said Ms. Elliott. “We’ve had students like Carlin McLean who has won two gold and one silver OFFSA medals over the last three years, and we’ve taken four or five athletes to the all-Ontario track meet each year.
Other athletes on the SOSSA team include runner/jumper Isaac Ofosu, runner Mat Kit, jumper Austin Kit, and Vanessa Sarjeant, hurdle jumper.
