Burlington fire damage could top $500,000

Damage will likely top half-a-million dollars following an industrial fire in Burlington.

Crews say flames and smoke were pouring from the roof of Martek Incorporated, near Walkers Line and Harvester Road, when they arrived on the scene shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Martek is a construction, landscaping and deck supply company.

Neighbouring buildings had to be evacuated as a precaution and heavy smoke slowed traffic along the nearby QEW.

Fortunately nobody was hurt.

The fire marshall is now looking for the cause.

But investigators says workers in the building at the time confirm they saw flames in a pile of material used to prevent erosion in landscaping projects.
