Barton student shatters 100m record

Chi Chi Chuks-Mady has shattered the public high schools 100-metre dash record.

The Barton Secondary School student raced down the track Thursday at Mohawk Sports Park in 11.46 seconds in her preliminary heat to set a new Hamilton-Wentworth Interscholastic Athletics Conference record.

Chuks-Mady went on to win the senior women's 100m final with a time of 14.10 heading into a gale-force wind.

The former record holders were Melanie Chiu (Orchard Park, 1999) and Shelley Ryder (Scott Park, 1991) with a time of 12.20.

In total, athletes from Mountain schools won 14 events at the May 14 meet at Mohawk Sports Park.

The top five athletes in most events will compete at SOSSA in St. Catharines on May 21.

It was a rainy morning and a very windy day, with most of the sprint races being held with a stiff headwind to overcome.
