Hamilton veterans over 60 years old will be able to park for free.
After months of debate about which vets should qualify for the perk, council agreed to the age-restricted compromise yesterday. Councillor Bernie Morelli recommended the criteria, arguing it best reflects the city's intention to help veterans who need it most.
"We're trying to do as much as we can," he said, noting council wants to show veterans the respect they deserve for serving their country.
The province issues special veterans plates to all veterans, including those who served recently. City staff cautioned against giving the parking perk to anyone with the special plate, arguing it could cost the city $1.3 million in lost revenue.
