Facing the worst steel market in a generation, ArcelorMittal Dofasco is cutting wages for its 5,000 Hamilton workers.
The steelmaker will reduce pay by 5 to 10 per cent across the board for six months in a bid to avoid layoffs.
It will also shut down for a week in June as demand continues to evaporate for the steel used in cars, appliances and construction projects.
"The market is not getting any better," said company spokesperson Larry Meyer. "We are dealing with the lowest level of demand that this generation, this workforce, has ever seen."
