City poverty was declining, but sudden downturn hit hard

Escalating welfare rolls and growing numbers of employment insurance claimants are signs that Hamilton’s poverty crisis is worsening.

Today the city’s Social Planning and Research Council (SPRC) released its Incomes and Poverty in Hamilton Report based on 2005 census data that showed nearly 90,000 people were living below the Statistics Canada low-income cutoff.
