Toronto will host the 2015 Pan Am Games after beating out two rival South American cities.The decision came down today in Guadalajara, Mexico, where a team including Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Toronto Mayor David Miller made their last pitch to host the games.
Toronto won with 33 votes, with Lima receiving 11 and Bogota 7.
The announcement took everyone by surprise. The Hamilton celebration at the Marine Discovery Centre in Hamilton had not yet begun when the announcement was made at 4:45 p.m., more than an hour earlier than expected.
David Adames, the executive director of Tourism Hamilton, said it was not when he was expecting it but "it's a good feeling nonetheless."
"It's like having a baby early."
