When people think of New York City, what comes to mind is a vibrant, buzzing, well-designed city, alive with pedestrian activity. So when some of Hamilton’s initiatives related to improving walkability, including the recent Hamilton Walking Master Class were highlighted at the 2009 International Walk 21 Conference in New York, you know we are in good company.
The next steps for making Hamilton more walkable includes follow-up sessions with City staff and community stakeholders and a public forum on November 5, 2009 that will be hosted by Public Health Services, Public Works and Planning and Economic Development.
This Walking Forum will include an afternoon session with key City planners, designers, other staff and recognized community professionals. They will be reviewing the outcome of this year’s Hamilton Walking Master Class project and the Walk 21 Conference and identifying ways to streamline the process of moving the walking agenda forward. The public session, in the evening, will highlight recommendations from the Hamilton Walking Master Class project, the afternoon sessions and neighbourhood walking audits. Ways to move walking initiatives forward will be solicited, including the potential for creating a pedestrian/walkability committee to look at the distinct needs of pedestrians.
