espite having only two days of practice, the head coach of the Cardinal Newman senior football squad said his troops were set to go against Notre Dame of Burlington in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final slated for yesterday at the Stoney Creek school.
“These guys have been preparing for two-and-a-half months,” said Gord Chiarot.
Newman, which is making their first trip to GHAC under the current format, beat St. Jean de Brebeuf 27- 9 at McMaster University on Monday to capture their first Hamilton Catholic school senior football championship in eight years.
Brebeuf opened scoring with less than four minutes to play in the first quarter, when Eric Johnson grabbed a fumble and ran 30 yards to the Newman end zone.
Chris Bartolomeo kicked the convert to make it 7-0 for the Braves.
The Newman squad responded on its next possession.
